OUR MASCOT

One day I was visiting the Rescuers Helpers Unite forum and noticed a plea for help for an American Bulldog who had recently had puppies and was on death row in a pound in Wales. Having already fostered and rehomed one of these beautiful dogs last year I couldn't bear to think of this girl losing her life at such a young age, she was thought to be around the age of 2 years.
One of my kennels was already occupied and the other earmarked for a bull terrier that was due to come to me in a few days time, so I knew I couldn't take her myself. The only other way I could think of ensuring her safety was to get her into boarding kennels, I got in touch with Sarah of Blazegate Kennels, near Holbeach, Lincs. I knew she would be well looked after there as they look after the boxers for Lincs, Essex & Trent Boxer Rescue and do a great job. Sarah was happy to take her. All I had to do now was find the money for her keep! I asked members of the Bullie Bar , the forum belonging to Bullies In Need, if they would help and in no time a raffle was organised, it was also relayed onto RHU as well. this raised enough to keep her at the kennels for a few weeks, a big thank you goes to all those involved.
Members of RHU and the Bullie Bar got together to arrange transport from Wales to Lincolnshire, I then heard that the bullie that was suppose to be coming into my kennel was no longer coming so I could take the AB into me instead of her going into kennels. The money raised could go to her being spayed, this would make sure she would never be bred from again.
A name was needed for this girl and a clever person thought that putting RHU and BIN together would make a great name, so Rhubin it is!! She is called Rhubi for short.
The day came when the transport run was to be made and I think everyone concerned was excited to be finally meeting Rhubi and getting her to safety. I was due to meet Michelle and her parents at Sutterton roundabout for the last leg of the journey and had heard before they got there that she was a really sweet and lovable girl. As soon as I saw her I knew she was special and that I would have trouble letting her go!
This is Michelle's account of that day;
Rhubi our gorgeous " mascot" was the first American Bulldog I had ever met and this was during her transport run to Ann's in Lincolnshire . My parents and I did the last stretch of the transport run to meet Ann . I was expecting to meet a very nervous and stressed dog, after being in the pound and travelling such a long distance from Wales, which involved her being transported in three cars before she even got to us ! How wrong I was !!!! Yes she looked nervous and " sad" but she was one of the sweetest dogs I had ever met ! During the journey she was in a crate for her safety and I sat next to her and bearing in mind she may not have ever been in a crate, all she wanted to do was get as close to me as she could . She spent the journey leaning against me through the crate asking for strokes and for me to scratch her ears and if I stopped she licked me until I did it again . Not a single bark , whine , growl came from this gorgeous girl, just a constant need to give and receive affection . At one stage I was in tears just thinking about what this sweet loving girl had been through and how forgiving to humans she was . My Mum and even my Dad were in tears! Once we got to the meeting place to hand her over to Ann and her final stretch of the journey I found it very very hard to see her go , even though she was going to Ann's where I knew she would be so happy and have loads of love and TLC , I wished with all my heart that I could have been in a situation where I could have kept her . I cried as I watched them driving away . However now Ann has said that she is keeping Rhubi and its obvious what a close loving bond has developed between Rhubi and Ann and how happy she is, I know that this gorgeous, gorgeous, sweet, loving girl has at last found her forever Home . Ann you are a very lucky Lady .
